MAGMA clients and staff were invited by City of Monc- ton / Ville de Moncton to the Elsipogtog Heritage Tour on May 15. On this tour, the traditional guides Kayla, Trinity and Shania shared their elders’ wisdom and teachings with everyone and how the Mikmaq people use traditional medicine and healing techniques to treat various ailments. After the smudging ceremony, every- one had the chance to take part in sparkling some ashes to the ground – symbolic of thanking Mother Earth for all that it provides. Embarking on a wonderful journey of discovery, participants visited the sweat lodge, the long house and were reminded to not tread on endangered plants which, if damaged, would take years to regrow. It was a wonderful educative experience learning how the Mikmaq people live in harmony with the land and other tribes, and developing a newfound sense of respect for the wisdoms and cultures of First Nations.
