A Summer of Listening, Learning and Looking Ahead

Another busy summer at MAGMA is about to end. Over the past few months, our teams have been working hard to support clients, strengthen partnerships, deliver programs and bring our community together. From MOSAÏQ Events to the weekly and sometimes daily arrivals of families fleeing war zones, this summer has been a reminder of the energy, diversity and commitment that exist within our organization and our community.

As a team, we have also spent the summer listening and learning. The arrival of new leadership has brought an opportunity to look at MAGMA with fresh eyes while building on the knowledge, experience and relationships that already exist within the organization. Conversations with staff, clients, community partners, municipalities, government representatives and other stakeholders have helped us better understand both the strengths we can build on and the challenges we need to address together.

One thing has become increasingly clear: MAGMA is much more than a collection of programs and services. We are a network of people and relationships built over many years. We are part of the community, and the community is part of us. The trust that newcomers, partners and institutions place in MAGMA is one of our greatest assets and one that we have a responsibility to protect and strengthen.

These conversations have also prompted some important reflections about settlement. The people we serve do not experience their lives in silos. A newcomer may need language training, employment support, help navigating systems, support for their children and opportunities to build connections, sometimes all at once. Their journey is one journey, even when our services are organized into different programs.

This challenges us to think about how we can make that journey more connected, accessible, and responsive. It also reminds us that settlement is about more than arriving. It is about finding stability but also finding opportunity. It is about participating in the economy, contributing to the community, building relationships, and developing a sense of belonging. As Canada navigates economic uncertainty and changing immigration realities, this broader understanding of settlement becomes increasingly important. Newcomers are not only recipients of services. They are workers, entrepreneurs, parents, students, volunteers, neighbours and community builders. They contribute to the economic and social fabric of the communities they call home.

This is an important conversation for MAGMA to be part of. With our experience, our relationships and our understanding of the realities facing newcomers, we have an opportunity to contribute not only through the services we deliver, but also through the conversations we help shape.

There is much work ahead. The coming months will bring continued organizational alignment, new partnerships, opportunities to improve how we work together and a renewed focus on the experience of the people we serve. If there is one thing this summer has reinforced, it is that we have a strong foundation to build on. That foundation is our people, our partnerships, and our commitment to community. As we move into the fall, we do so with a shared responsibility to keep listening, keep learning and keep improving — together. The summer may be coming to an end, but the work continues. And there is much to look forward to.
