Hello – Bonjour, from the MAGMA Language School team!

We are thrilled to welcome you to our page and share with you a little bit about our Language School world. With a team from over 12 countries from around the world and over 15 spoken languages, we mean it when we say that languages are our passion and setting newcomers up for success in their new home and community in our region is our commitment.

Learning a new language is more than just learning to speak, listen, read and write in a new language; it is a magical key to unlocking new cultures, exploring new ways of communicating, and building social and professional bonds with new communities that one calls home. Learning a new language takes courage, is exciting and empowering and it creates endless opportunities, yet it does not come without challenges. At the MAGMA Language School, we understand that equipping newcomers with the right tools and cultural knowledge to connect and communicate efficiently with their new communities is key to helping them succeed on social, professional and economic levels – and we always take pride in being part of the newcomers settlement and integration journey.

“Do you know what a foreign accent is?
It’s a sign of bravery.” ,
Amy Chua

The past three months have been full of exciting moments! Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening from September to December:

Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) National Consultations

On October 1st, MAGMA Language School teachers and administrative team were invited to take part in national consultations to discuss modernizing the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).

Nine LINC teachers representing all three learning stages from Literacy, Stage 1 and Stage 2, as well as MAGMA Language School Learning Assistant and Teacher Lead, took part in engaging and important discussions to help improve understanding and application of the CLB.

The MAGMA Language School team were joined by other settlement agencies staff from Fredericton and Saint John, and they enjoyed meeting new people in the Settlement sector and giving feedback based on their experience using the Canadian Language Benchmark.

Thank you to the organizers for the engaging and important opportunity.

MAGMA Community Compass Outing: what an unforgettable experience it was!

On October 3rd, Teacher Polina and her CLB4  students attended the Community Compass in Moncton.

A bi-annual event organized by MAGMA, it was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore and learn more about newcomer services, connect with the community, and collect valuable resources to support their settlement journey.

From meeting a fluffy fox and enjoying sweet treats, to face painting and instant photo souvenirs, there was fun at every corner!

Most importantly, it gave the students a chance to practice their English in a real-world setting, boosting both confidence and connection.

“It was the perfect mix of learning, fun, and community connection,” shared teacher Polina. We are proud to be part of a community that celebrates inclusion, learning, and togetherness.

Childcare Assistant Program: Cohort 7 Graduation

On October 16th, MAGMA Language School celebrated the graduation of the 7th Cohort of the Childcare Assistant Program.

A sector-specific program funded by IRCC as part of the English language training activities offered at MAGMA, the program provides participants with the opportunity to develop and learn new language and communication skills that are employment focused.

We are proud of the Cohort 7 and of the hard work they have put to build skills, confidence, and readiness for the Canadian workplace.

The program not only is a first step towards a career in childcare to some, but also part of everyone’s English language learning journey.

We are proud of the students’ commitment, teamwork, and enthusiasm which were evident throughout the program.

MAGMA is excited to see them move forward with the knowledge and experience they have gained and would like to congratulate each graduate again on this important milestone.

Congratulations to Cohort 7 — we look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make in our community!

Bingo Night with teacher Hugo.

Students from the online English Conversation Circle came together for a lively in-person bingo night at the MAGMA Atrium in November. This popular event was a wonderful opportunity for classmates to meet face-to-face, strengthen their connections, and practice English in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Everyone also enjoyed a delicious multicultural potluck, featuring dishes from around the world. The blend of food, conversation, and cultural exchange made the evening truly unforgettable.

Thank you, teacher Hugo, for organizing this and for all the students who attended!

Congratulations to our MAGMA Language School Cohort 6!

We feel tremendously honoured to be part of the amazing journey newcomers make building their new life in our region. And yesterday was no exception as it marked the beginning of another amazing chapter in the life of our Start-Up students who celebrated their graduation upon completing their English language training.
As always, it is a privilege for us at MAGMA to support the students’ journey and to get to learn about their stories, culture, and aspirations as they build a strong community.

Start-Up is a provincially funded 12-week English language training course where newcomers develop and learn new communication skills while learning English; the program is accessible to non-PR newcomers.
