Imagine you’ve just arrived in a foreign country. The culture and language is completely different, and you don’t have any family or friends yet. Now imagine you’re introduced to someone who is there just for you and your family. They help you break out of the sense of isolation by showing you around, build your language skills by practicing your conversations and, most importantly, help you feel at home by just being a friend. Be that person.
MAGMA’s Community Connection program pairs local volunteers with new arrivals, giving the opportunity for new friendships that could last a lifetime.
"No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it for someone else."
The most essential skill a newcomer can have is the ability to communicate effectively with the members of their new community. MAGMA offers free language classes and conversation circles in both French and English, and we’re always looking for tutors and substitute teachers.
"I always wondered why somebody didn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody."
Business is the number one reason for newcomers to come to Greater Moncton. They’re arriving to set up business, create employment and add their skills to the workforce. However, they face challenges in mastering the local language skills and business culture—challenges you can be part of overcoming.
As part of the Business Connections program you can share your business skills, leadership and experience by taking part in mock interviews and working with our employment and business start-up programs.
“Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and help them become what they are capable of being.”
Be part of creating a more vibrant cultural community. Share your skills with eager learners as they look to learn more about the culture of their new community.
What’s your passion? Skating? Scrapbooking? Snowshoeing? Talk to us about creating a class as part of the Cultural Connections program to start sharing the fun.
“The greatness of a craft consists firstly in how it brings comradeship.”

MAGMA has dozens of projects helping newcomers integrate into the local community, none of which would be possible without the extra sets of hands of our volunteers. From the moment newcomers arrive through to them sharing their culture back with the community through multicultural events, MAGMA is there for them—and you can be too.
Be the extra set of hands we need as we set up entertainment stages, translate documents, take photos and videos, help move into new homes and cook foods from around the world.
“Everyone can be great because anyone can serve.”
