Our Language Strategy

At MAGMA, we understand that there can be no integration without communication. Therefore our Language Department ensures newcomers have access to free lessons in their choice of either English or French so they can connect with new friends and neighbours and put their economic skills to work for their community.

Through language, we all connect. We bring the languages of Canada to newcomers, and they bring the languages of the world to Greater Moncton. Being able to speak with the world broadens our international network, opening new lines of communication and expanding commerce and opportunity. That’s how the world comes together.

Getting Started

Those looking to join language classes walk through the following steps:

  1. Book an appointment to meet with our Settlement Coordinator by sending their full name and preferred meeting time and date to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
  2. The Settlement Coordinator will register them as a MAGMA client and determine what their professional and personal goals are.
  3. The Settlement Coordinator will then arrange for their language to be assessed.Once their language level has been determined they’ll meet with the Language Coordinator to look at the right class options for them that match both their language levels and their goals, both within MAGMA and through our partnering language training organizations.

Accessing Classes

Once their level has been determined, we’ll look to find the learning arrangement that works best for the student. MAGMA provides many levels of support to maximize access to classes.

To meet the demands of our clients’ lives, we offer day and night classes:

Monday - Friday

  • Mornings 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
  • Afternoons 1–4 p.m.
  • Evenings 6–9 p.m.

Saturday

  • Mornings 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

 * Which class the student attends will depend on their level and available spaces in the class.

Childminding

To enable families with young children to learn, we provide free daytime childminding while their parents are in class.

Learning the Essentials

If not already at that level, through programs such as Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) we ensure our clients have mastered a solid base of written and spoken communication, while at the same time gaining a full appreciation for Canadian culture, values and heritage.

This provides them with the foundation of language and cross-cultural social skills needed to expand into specialty classes and programs as desired, or to continue to develop through the higher levels of LINC including any other LINC program offered across Canada.

Working in English and French—Professional Language Classes

Once the students have mastered intermediate communication, a world of possibilities opens up. Finding the right job or opening your own business is virtually impossible without specialized language skills. MAGMA therefore allows students to build on the fundamentals through language courses geared towards job seekers and entrepreneurs.

Becoming a Canadian Citizen

Language is one of the key requirements for citizenship, and gaining certification at the right level in our LINC classes gives newcomers the official language levels needed to qualify for that requirement as Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4.
